Add Patra’s DNS records at another DNS host
The steps are the same everywhere; only the names of the fields change.
On this page
Steps
- Sign in where your domain’s DNS is managed. That’s often where you bought the domain.
- Find the DNS settings. They may be called DNS management, zone editor or advanced DNS.
- Add each record from your panel with the type it shows. Leave the MX record for your domain itself until you go live.
- Save, then press Verify in your panel.
Copy each record exactly as your Patra panel shows it. Open Domains in your admin console (the Patra panel), then your domain. The panel lists every record your domain needs, with its type, name and value in your DNS host’s own words, and a copy button for each. The records, and how many there are, depend on your domain, so always work from the panel.
What other hosts call the fields
Your panel recognises these hosts and shows each record with their field names.
| Host | Name field | Value field | For the domain itself |
|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean | Hostname | Is an alias of (CNAME), Value (TXT) | @ |
| Vercel | Name | Value | Leave it empty |
| Netlify | Name | Value | @ |
| HostGator | Host | Points To | @ |
| Name.com | Host | Answer | Leave it empty |
| Gandi | Name | Value | @ |
| Network Solutions | Host | Points to | @ |
| Azure DNS | Name | Value | @ |
Host not listed? The fields are usually called Name or Host, and Value, Points to, Target or Answer. MX records also have a priority.
Tips
Proxy off. Some DNS hosts can send a record through their own proxy or network (often shown as a cloud icon or a Proxy switch). Turn that off for every record from your panel, so the checker and other mail servers see the real value.
TTL. Keep your host’s default.
Email routing or forwarding. If your host offers its own email routing or forwarding, it may lock your MX records. Turn it off before you go live.
The name field. Most DNS hosts add your domain to the name for you, so type only the short part: _dmarc, not _dmarc.yourcompany.com. Your panel already shows names in this short form. For the domain itself, type @, or leave the field empty if your host asks you to; your panel shows which. If the checker shows your domain twice in a name, remove it from the name.
Only one SPF record. A domain can have only one SPF record (a TXT record that starts with v=spf1). If you already have one, don’t add a second. Instead, edit the one you have: copy the part of your panel’s SPF value that starts with include: and paste it just before the ~all or -all at the end. For example, v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all becomes v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com include:… ~all, with the include from your panel in place of include:…. Once you’ve moved, remove your old provider’s include if it no longer sends mail for you.
Can’t find the DNS settings? Your domain’s nameservers may point somewhere else. Ask whoever set up your website or domain, or send them the link from Send them these instructions.
