Open-source notices
Patra is built with open-source software. This page lists the main parts, the licence of each, and where to get their source code: free of charge, with no sign-in.
The main parts
| Part | What it does in Patra | Licence | Changed by us? | Source code |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bulwark Webmail 1.13.0 | The webmail, at mail.trypatra.com | GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 only, with an additional permission; includes earlier work under the MIT License | Yes: see Webmail | Webmail source code and licence, also linked in the webmail under Settings, then About |
| Stalwart 0.16.25 | The mail server: it receives, stores and sends mail, and checks sign-ins from webmail and mail apps | GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 only, the licence we use it under. The official release also contains Enterprise parts under the Stalwart Enterprise License, which are inactive without a licence key: see Mail server | No | Stalwart 0.16.25 source code |
| Stalwart WebUI 1.0.11 | The mail server’s own account pages | GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 only, the licence we use it under. Stalwart Labs also offers it under the Stalwart Enterprise License: see Mail server | No | Stalwart WebUI 1.0.11 source code |
Webmail
Our webmail is a modified version of Bulwark Webmail 1.13.0, copyright © 2025–2026 the Bulwark Project Authors, which includes earlier work under the MIT License, copyright © 2025 Matthieu MALVACHE. It is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3, with an additional permission from its authors.
We changed it so that it carries our name: we replaced the original product names in its text with neutral words, added our name and logos, and pointed its source code link to our own copy. The source code page of each version lists its changes, and the BUILD.md file in its source archive lists every file we changed.
The webmail source code page offers the complete source code of the version we run, with our changes and the scripts we build it with, as a free download. Anyone who uses the webmail can also open it from Settings, then About.
Mail server
Our mail server runs Stalwart, version 0.16.25, made by Stalwart Labs LLC. We run the official release exactly as Stalwart Labs publishes it, with our own settings, so its source code is the code they publish: Stalwart release 0.16.25.
Stalwart Labs offers Stalwart under two licences: the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3, and the Stalwart Enterprise License (SELv2), a proprietary licence. The official release also contains Stalwart’s paid Enterprise features, which are not open source and work only with a licence key from Stalwart Labs. We don’t have a licence key, so those features are not active on our servers: the server runs with the features of Stalwart’s open-source Community Edition.
The mail server’s own account pages come from Stalwart WebUI, version 1.0.11, also made by Stalwart Labs, which offers it under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3, and the Stalwart Enterprise License. We use the official release without changes: Stalwart WebUI release 1.0.11.
Other open-source software
- In the webmail. The webmail includes packages and fonts by other authors, such as Next.js, React, Tiptap and DOMPurify, and the Geist and Hanken Grotesk fonts. They are licensed under the MIT, ISC, Apache 2.0, BSD and other licences, and the fonts under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The third-party notices file, linked from the webmail source code page, lists each one with its copyright notice and licence.
- In the admin console and on this website. They are our own software. The code that the admin console sends to your browser includes open-source packages such as Next.js, React and Zod, mostly under the MIT License; its third-party notices list each one with its copyright notice and licence. Both use the Inter and Manrope fonts, licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 (Inter licence, Manrope licence).
- On our servers. Our servers also run other open-source software, such as PostgreSQL and Node.js, as their projects publish it. We don’t distribute that software to anyone.
Your rights under these licences
Each open-source licence gives you rights of its own, for example to copy, study, change and share the software it covers. Our Terms of Service apply to the Patra service and do not limit those rights. If you can’t find the source code of a part of Patra that you received from us, write to hello@trypatra.com and we will help.
