Go live: point your MX record to Patra
Your MX record tells other mail servers where to deliver mail for your domain. Change it last, when your team is ready.

No email on this domain yet? Then nothing needs to move: add the MX record whenever you like, once your people exist.
Before you switch
- Your domain shows as verified.
- Everyone has a mailbox and knows their password (or has their setup link).
- Everyone can sign in to webmail.
Make the switch
- At your DNS host, delete every MX record for your domain itself (name
@, or left empty) that points to your old provider. Your panel lists the ones it found. If your panel lists a bounce MX record (namedbounce), keep it. - Add the MX record your panel shows under At go-live. Copy it exactly as your Patra panel shows it: its type, name, mail server and priority.
- Save. Your panel shows Watching for the switch, then confirms when your MX record points to Patra.
Don’t keep the old MX records “as a backup”. Mail would keep going to your old provider.
Hosts with a special MX setting
| Host | What to do |
|---|---|
| Namecheap | MX records go in Mail Settings, then Custom MX, not in Host Records. |
| Wix | Edit MX Records, then Other. |
| OVHcloud | End the target with a dot. |
What happens next
- Mail starts arriving at Patra as other servers notice the change. Until then, some mail still goes to your old provider, usually for a few hours and occasionally up to two days.
- Each person can now set up their phone and computer, then import their old mail once the switch has settled.
- Keep your old account open until everyone has imported their old mail.
- Once everyone has moved, close the old account or remove your domain from it. Some providers keep delivering mail between colleagues internally until you do.
- Update your SPF record if your old provider no longer sends for you: remove its include and keep the one from your panel.
Changed your mind?
Put the old MX records back and remove Patra’s.
