Is your DNS at Namecheap?

Namecheap manages your DNS if your domain’s nameservers end in registrar-servers.com (BasicDNS or PremiumDNS). Your Patra panel shows the DNS host it found: open Domains in your admin console, then your domain.

Open your DNS settings

  1. Sign in and open Domain List.
  2. Choose Manage next to your domain, then the Advanced DNS tab.

Add the records

Copy each record exactly as your Patra panel shows it. Open Domains in your admin console (the Patra panel), then your domain. The panel lists every record your domain needs, with its type, name and value in your DNS host’s own words, and a copy button for each. The records, and how many there are, depend on your domain, so always work from the panel.

For each record in your panel, go to Host Records, choose Add New Record, pick the type, fill in the fields, then select the tick to save. Fill in the fields like this:

Type
The type your panel shows, such as TXT, CNAME or SRV
Host
The short name your panel shows, without your domain. For the domain itself, @
Value
The value your panel shows
Priority
For MX records, the priority your panel shows. The Outlook SRV record also has a weight and a port: copy each from your panel
TTL
Automatic
  1. Add the records under Required first, then the ones under Recommended for better delivery.
  2. Already have an SPF record (a TXT record on your domain that starts with v=spf1)? Edit it instead of adding a second one. See Tips.
  3. Leave the MX record for your domain itself until you go live (below).
  4. Press Verify in your panel. It also keeps checking by itself while the page is open, and we email you when your domain is verified.
  • MX records live under Mail Settings. At Namecheap, MX records go in Mail Settings, then Custom MX, not in Host Records. If your domain already uses Custom MX, you can add an MX record from your panel there at any time. If it uses Namecheap’s email forwarding or Private Email, choosing Custom MX replaces them, so add MX records from your panel (including a bounce record, if your panel lists one) only when you go live.

Go live at Namecheap

When your team is ready to receive mail at Patra, switch your MX record. Use the MX record your panel lists under At go-live.

  1. Open Mail Settings and choose Custom MX.
  2. Delete any MX records for your old email.
  3. Add the MX record from your panel: Host, Value and Priority exactly as shown, then save.

Your panel shows Watching for the switch, then confirms when mail for your domain is coming to Patra. Read Go live for what happens next.

Tips

  • Make sure there’s no CNAME record for @: it stops MX records from working.
  • Namecheap says changes usually take about 30 minutes.

Only one SPF record. A domain can have only one SPF record (a TXT record that starts with v=spf1). If you already have one, don’t add a second. Instead, edit the one you have: copy the part of your panel’s SPF value that starts with include: and paste it just before the ~all or -all at the end. For example, v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all becomes v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com include:… ~all, with the include from your panel in place of include:…. Once you’ve moved, remove your old provider’s include if it no longer sends mail for you.

The name field. Most DNS hosts add your domain to the name for you, so type only the short part: _dmarc, not _dmarc.yourcompany.com. Your panel already shows names in this short form. For the domain itself, type @, or leave the field empty if your host asks you to; your panel shows which. If the checker shows your domain twice in a name, remove it from the name.
